To celebrate World Bartender Day on the 24th of February, award-winning Rooster Rojo® tequila Global Brand Ambassador, Ansis Ancovs, has prepared 15 top tips on how to appreciate your bartender on this key day and throughout the year.
“During my 25 years in the industry, I have met hundreds of bartenders and we have exchanged many interesting stories. Repeatedly I have heard that bartenders often feel unappreciated and this is something we would like to change,” said Ansis Ancovs, the Global Brand Ambassador of Rooster Rojo tequila.
“As a great on-trade brand, Rooster Rojo tequila is often the bartender’s choice, so, we would like thank all our friends at bars and cafes and share 15 tips on how to appreciate your favourite bartenders, even without meeting up in person,” said Ansis Ancovs.
- Know your drink. Be ready with your order when the bartender or waiter approaches. It’s best if you order your drinks from the bar’s menu, if not – order a classic cocktail rather than an unknown drink that will take a long time to prepare.
- Ask for advice. Ask what the bartender likes making and lead with his or her choice. If you're going to ask for a recommendation, take it and expand your experience with interesting drinks.
- Get to know your bartender. Ask the bartender his or her name after the first drink and say thanks for the attention. “Please” and “Thank you” are both really valued. Remember to use them while in the bar.
- Manage your bill. Try to avoid settling your bill with more than one credit card. Inform staff if you know that you are going to pay your bill separately, before placing your order. And do not forget, one of you still has to tip!
- Use the take-away option. If during the pandemic you can’t visit your favourite places, order a take-away! Many bars are offering this solution, so, reach out to your friends at the bar and support their businesses until you meet in person.
- Build a bond on social media. Ask for the bartender’s name and tag him or her while filming or taking a photo of their masterpiece – your cocktail. Ask permission to do this. It will help the venue to attract more customers and build a bartender’s reputation.
- Follow the bartender’s choice. At the bar, don’t order drinks that contain only the brands you love or represent. Trust the bartender’s choice and enjoy the occasion.
- Trust the recipe. A cocktail is not Fish & Chips that you can add salt to. Please do not ask bartender to make the cocktail stronger.
- Show a true interest. If you are a brand owner or represent a beverage company, show interest in their daily life behind the bar: what people are ordering, what customers like, what POS materials seems to be attractive to people and continue your partnership from there.
- Don’t use your status. If you work in the drinks industry, don’t assume you automatically should receive discounts or special offers. It can be nice, but always make sure you thank the bartender with a generous tip.
- Respect the last call. Bar staff would really appreciate your understanding of opening hours and not ordering any more rounds when the bar closing. That’s what the “Last Call” is for.
- Behave well. If you also order for the rest of your group, order all the drinks at once instead of waiting for just one to be served. Also, keep in mind that you’re in a bar, not at charging point so don’t ask if you can charge your phone somewhere.
- Look for new collaboration opportunities. If your favourite bartender is out of the business at the moment, ask if he or she would be interested in extra projects – giving online masterclasses, working with your brand as an ambassador, etc.
- Help when possible. Support campaigns that help furloughed bartenders or the industry to overcome the negative effect of Covid-19. There are plenty great initiatives out there!
- Be positive – share a joke or good news! Is there such a thing as the perfect man? Yes, he’s called a bartender!
